Outlast 2: A Chilling Survival Horror Game
Outlast 2 is one of the best survival horror games. In this survival horror game, The player controls the investigative journalist Blake Langermann, who investigates a dilapidated rural area in Supai, near the western edge of the Colorado Plateau. Polygon releases 10 minutes of footage from a game-play preview of the video game developer Red Barrels Studio’s forthcoming survival-horror title, Outlast 2. With Outlast 2, Red Barrel Games has done their best to ramp up the insanity and diversify the game-play, all while keeping the soul of the game intact, survival horror.
You don’t fight or kill the hostiles you encounter in Outlast 2, which is the major difference between this series and games like Resident Evil
. You’re just a guy with a video camera, and outside of a few scripted sequences and quick time events you can’t even punch or kick at your enemies. Outlast 2 is a first-person survival horror game that, like its predecessors Outlast and Outlast: Whistleblower, is a single-player campaign.
Players have a video camera equipped with night vision, allowing them to peer down dark hallways with an eerie green light and capture written journal entries pertinent to the story. The camera in Outlast 2 has zooming capabilities that let players spy on potential enemies from afar, and a sound detector that is used for a few clever moments in the game.As with the previous game in the series, players must use stealth to overcome challenges, while violence is left as a minimally effective last resort. Outlast 2’s scares get better towards the end of the game, becoming more about horror and unsettling events and less reliant on startling you, but the game-play gets worse with more instant-kills and chase sequences that go on too long. Dying in Outlast 2 isn’t that big of a deal thanks to the game’s generous checkpoints, and since Blake re-spawns with full health, players may find that killing themselves is a good way to save supplies
And if it’s not the game-play, it is the story-line and cinematic scenes that qualifies it to be one of the creepiest PlayStation 2 horror games of all time.If this game was an open world survival
I would guarantee you that a majority of players would most likely leave Lynn behind. In a sea of indistinguishable first-person horror games designed to make YouTubers scream, Outlast stood out for its grisly charm, tense stealth game-play, and an outrageous style.
Game-play: 6/10 I’m not big on games where I only have a flashlight or video camera. Penumbra and Amnesia sort of ruined that for me. The game is great, just not big on the game-play.
Visuals: 10/10 Holy Mother Mary, the graphics in this game are amazing and…terrifying.
Story: 9/10 The story was pretty good, definitely had some twists thrown in there and plenty of jump-scares for the true horror genre player.
Overall: 7.5/10 Outlast 2‘s game-play has its issues, but many horror fans will be able to look past its problems to see the story through to the end.
