Supermassive Games Soon to Be Released: The Inpatient VR
The Inpatient is an upcoming psychological horror video game developed by Supermassive Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation 4 and its virtual reality headset, PlayStation Virtual Reality. This is exciting for many reasons, the largest of which being that we can all enjoy terrifying storytelling of a creepy insane asylum in 360 degree virtual reality.
The Inpatient VR is set up as a prequel to Until Dawn, moving the action from the isolated cabin in the woods to the creepy Blackwood Sanitorium, where experimentation seems to have gone seriously awry some 60 years before the plot of Until Dawn. The story of the first was a brilliant thrill ride through multiple horror genres, and The Inpatient has the potential to drop us right in the middle of it all using the virtual reality platform.
With every choice you make you’ll see consequences and changes to the story, so you’ll need to be on your toes. Supermassive Games took the world they carefully crafted in Until Dawn, and now they’re plunging all of it into VR with The Inpatient, a psychological horror game which will see you taking up residence in the Sanatorium and undergoing all sorts of nightmarish torment. The game is set during the 1950s in a Sanatorium up on the side of the mountain and should lead into the beginning of the main game.
We have little details on the game except for that it will be about the main character, John Marston. If you know the story of Until Dawn, you know how the story of The Inpatient is likely to end, but with what I saw, I’m convinced there’s even more to Blackwood Sanatorium than the history that we dug up in Until Dawn.
While we can’t make any assumptions about the length of the game based on trophies, having a Platinum does bode well for The Inpatient being more than a brief VR experience.
